[ Let’s dance! Let’s draw!] workshop by Moriyama Kaiji

[Dance like you are drawing a picture, draw a picture like you are dancing].
Responding to the call 18 children gathered to the children atelier at Yokohama Museum.
Movement that is sharp and keen but is supple, scapula that’s is visible on the muscular body and although the long blond hair appearance that makes you imagine a different world Mr Moriyama interacting with the 18 children is meek and attracting…

Co- sponsored by KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater and Yokohama Museums children atelier, we held a workshop for children that connects two different fields; museums and theaters. The teacher is Mr Moriyama Kaiji who is a dancer•choreographer that is working on a new number for this summers KAAT children’s program. Through experiencing both [Dancing] and [Drawing] how did the children spend their time with Mr Moriyama.
We interviewed Mr Moriyama about his thoughts of the workshop and his sentiment on the next workshop by KAAT [Alice and Wonderland].

< After the workshop with the children>

How was the workshop with the children?

It was fun. I had my concerns on what to do because it was my first time to do a workshop on drawing pictures with children. But I guess you are not supposed to over think these things. It was nice to build it all up through interaction with the children. You can’t make a great workshop by planning everything perfectly to the last bit. The reason I say this is because even if you plan thoroughly what you do today will only happen today. In today’s workshop I challenged myself to[ follow the lines I drew and to check the trajectory]. To approach through the lines I drew is something I thought of through the course of today’s session. I want to complement myself for noticing. Lol I myself like drawing so I always move around creating different patterns in the air. We also did something called [word dancing] today and this time I got to chance to try that with the children.

IMG_6705_th Hold crayons in each hand, lay on your back and move your hands centering yourself to describe an arc.

The target was first – forth grade elementary school students. How was the children?

The lower grade children in elementary school who participated this time is a docile and flexible age isn’t it. Being with the children it took me back to the innocence I had when I was a child. This time we had them draw freely without care on a paper that looked like a big canvas. Recently, especially in the city, there are fewer places where you can let it out. Like being told [you can’t do that children are very restricted. However, just for today they were able to doodle whatever on a big paper. It was fun.

How did you feel about drawing while dancing?

I don’t think there is anything parting art and dance. Considering music and calligraphy are both forms of expression I believe both link to each other as well. They are similar in a sense that they both mediate the our bodies. Drawing a picture is the same as dancing because they are both expressions through the body. The difference is what you use to pour it all out. All expression does not come together without something somatic.

What do you think of the cooperation between the KAAT and the Yokohama Museum?

I think art is something that connects people. Considering that theaters and museums taking each other’s hand is a good thing for the community. I think there is this special local love that people living there have. There is a specific culture that Kanagawa has and I think it’s a wonderful thing that theaters and museums can connect with each other.

Mr Moriyama you are from Kanagawa, Sagamihara so how do you feel about working in Kanagawa?

I grew up in Sagamihara all my life and moved out of my home town to Tokyo when I went in to the world of theater. I still work in Tokyo now but Sagamihara is somewhere I can go back any time. I enjoy being able to work in Kanagawa which is my home town. Dance at times plays a role such as prayer and locality. For instance, like shrine maiden dances and folk dances which has the meaning of praying for the hometown dance often mediates between two different things. It’s something that is more conscious to dance locally. So, I amber happy to be able to dance in my hometown.

What is the highlight of the new KAAT creation [ Alive in Wonderland]?

It’s in the middle of production right now. We are having many different dancers express themselves with their body and trying figure things out. It’s originally a Lewis Carroll production that was based on children’s imagination and it shows Alice’s imaginary world. Adults creating a child’s imaginary world means that adults have a big imagination as much as a child has. Adults want to show their ideas too. The way I express myself is through dance and I want to show my imagination as well as what I creat to the children.

Is there any thing you found in this work shop that will lead to a new creation?

The white canvas filled with color by the crayons in just a moment. It was really just a moment. Color, lines, picture. I felt the energy coming out of their imagination. The ideas were expressed in detail and the energy was born. I want to use that energy in the theater. I don’t want to lose to the children’s energy. I can draw but I always have the urge to draw it clean and in balance. However, what the children drew today wasn’t something that could be drawn just by thinking about it. It’s something that’s made off the cuff over their imagination. I envy their imagination sometimes. Since it’s a play there is a program and a script. It doesn’t work if you just explode your ideas freely. We have to make it so the plan and improvisation is balanced. However, like the children that don’t calculate to[try to draw it nice],I want to build a play where we have parts we build up but also have the parts where we go outside of the box. Something that has a script but is built on the spot and it still has the looseness of improvisation is what I want to creat. I realized this looking at the children today.

IMG_6705_th If you say a spell the lights we’ll go of and the black light will show the parts that was painted. Hands and faces with paint on will faintly show as well.

KAAT creates several numbers titled the kids program. The audience is adults and children. Our motto when creating is[Never it being child’s play, something that reflects the era which is plentiful and radical at the same time. Together with artists, actors and performers that are on the frontline creat a truly imaginative creation that speak to both adults and children]

At the Yokohama Museum besides having exhibit space for the multiple exhibitions we have, we have a children’s atelier which is rare throughout the country. In the very popular [parents and children free zone] children can draw freely and play with clay. The concept is not to [teach art] but to encourage children motivation on wanting to [try] to bring out their imagination as well as for them to have fun.

This workshop was created and planned as part of the Kanagawa Arts Theaters [KAAT children workshop] co-sponsored by the Yokohama Museums children atelier. The KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater that knows all the possibilities of Mr Moriyama’s dancing and the Yokohama Museums children atelier who are the professionals of children’s Arts education tagged together to create a new type of imagination workshop.

[I’ve felt that as children move their body’s there hearts loosen up. Nevertheless, I could see the children opening their hearts up just in the hour they spent with Mr Kaiji.] said the chief educator Ms Okazaki Tomomi of the Yokohama Museums children atelier. [To draw often becomes that has a specific shape however, today it became a trajectory of the lines they danced. You can’t make this out into a picture by trying to do so. To draw a line as a line is very abstract but the children understood it]. The staff from the Yokohama Museums children atelier that fully supported the workshop also showed their wow and gratitude towards the creations the children made through freeing their hearts and Mr Moriyama for bringing it out of them.

In addition, Ms Konuma Tomoko the producer of Kanagawa Arts Theaters production department said [I was once again impressed with Mr Kaiji. Moreover, the comfort of the children’s atelier. I felt that the way they make you feel that everything will be okay and they will be accepting of everything was the result of experience. To spread the paper in a big open space was something that was out of the ordinary. All the children were showing there personalities and they all looked like they were having a good time. It became a great workshop.]
