[Studio HIKARI Kazuyuki Kazuyuki: Kanagawa Prefecture Performing Arts Director Interview]

Studio HIKARI, a small theater space, will reopen after renovation. What specifically is its appeal to young artists? We asked Kazuyuki Kazuya, manager of Momijizaka Hall Studio HIKARI.

---I think Studio HIKARI, which will open in March 2019, will be primarily used by Magcal Theater, but what kind of people do you envision using it?
Kazuyuki Kazuya (hereinafter referred to as Kazuya): The Youth Center is a place for the healthy development of young people in Kanagawa Prefecture. We are developing all our businesses based on this concept. Even if you look at it nationwide, it can be said that it is rare to find a facility for young people on this scale and with such a rich history. We have decided to renovate Studio HIKARI as a space specializing in performances including dance, music, and art, as well as physical expression using the body and voice. We will develop theater and dance businesses centered on Magcal Theater, which provides Studio HIKARI as a venue.

<Magical Theater> Hobby Junior “High School Students from Minami, Osaka” (2016)

I would like young people to actively use it. I want young people to grow richer by expressing themselves through performing arts. We hope that the presentations at Studio HIKARI will be used as a foothold by young and creative people, such as those in their 20s and junior high and high school students under 20. Of course, the "users" mentioned here include not only the performers, but also the audience. In other words, we aim to create an audience in a broader sense, and create a movement in which young artists work together with audiences, including even younger people. I would like to move in that direction.

---What does the challenge of this location mean to Studio HIKARI's main target audience, people in their 20s and young people under 20?
Kareya: Throughout the year, the Youth Center holds theater and dance competitions, recitals, and seminars for junior high and high schools in the prefecture at Momijizaka Hall. For example, it would be great if a youth center could become a place for a high school student to come back to after graduating from high school and entering university to continue performing in theater or dance. In this way, we aim to have all programs work together organically. In the Yokohama area, there hasn't been a theater with a capacity of just over 100 seats for a long time. There are very few spaces of this size not only in Yokohama but also in the metropolitan area. For young artists, what is most needed is a venue with a capacity of around 100 to 150 people. First of all, get up close and personal with customers, hone your skills and performance, and receive direct feedback. After taking that step, perform at a larger venue. Currently, there are theaters in both Tokyo and Yokohama that seat only a few dozen people, but the next step is to suddenly increase the size to over 200 seats. Studio HIKARI can be said to be a small theater space with an ideal scale as a place where we can hone our expressions during this time.

――As the opening of Studio HIKARI approaches, how do you feel about the reaction from people involved in the stage?
Kashiya: When I talk to various people about this place, I get responses such as ``I'm surprised that a place like this even exists'' and ``I definitely want to try it.'' We have received feedback that both theater and dance artists are finding it appealing. Studio HIKARI will mainly be used by young artists and audiences in Kanagawa Prefecture, but in terms of accessibility, we would also like artists from the Tokyo metropolitan area, Tokyo, and other metropolitan areas outside of Tokyo to use it as well. As a result, I would like to create a synergistic effect that will allow Kanagawa to become a hub where young talent can be showcased.

◎Apply to Magcal Theater and present your work at Studio HIKARI!
Studio HIKARI can be rented as a rental studio or used for co-sponsored programs, but we encourage all young artists to take on the challenge of applying to the open program Magcal Theater.

Magcal Theater is an initiative of Kanagawa Prefecture that aims to discover and develop young talent. Groups selected by Magcal Theater can use Studio HIKARI as a performance venue free of charge (includes incidental facilities). Furthermore, the training room on the 3rd floor of the Youth Center can be used as a rehearsal space on weekday nights. Public recruitment for theater companies and companies is held twice a year.
Studio HIKARI plans to use the Magcal Theater for half of the dates per year. Please take advantage of this opportunity!

◎We have received messages of support from artists participating in Magcal Theater!!
We have received messages of support for Studio HIKARI from artists from theater companies who have participated in Magcal Theater and used the multipurpose plaza! We have been asked to participate in Magcal Theater and share their experiences using the multipurpose plaza, the predecessor of Studio HIKARI, as well as their expectations for the newly renovated space.

◇Marie Kobayashi◇
(Choreography, director, dancer, actor. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Head of waqu:iraz.)

I like theater. She was familiar to him as she often went to dance recitals, which she had learned from a young age, and to see plays with her mother, who loved musicals. Once I realized the appeal of being disconnected from reality and laughing, crying, and getting angry with a large group of people, I was hooked.

Since I've become the creator, planning my own projects, and renting theaters, every time I see a space that hasn't been painted yet, I feel like I've acquired a blank canvas. . My heart is pounding, thinking about what kind of picture I will draw next.

At the multipurpose plaza (currently Studio HIKARI), Magcal Theater's participation works include ``Our Body is Made of Stars (2016)'' and an all-female cast work ``My Work (2018)''. ” were performed. The work I performed for the first time in 2016 had the theme of the universe and the birth of life, and had the image of a science museum or educational program, so I instinctively felt that this space inside the youth center would be a perfect fit. Two years later, I performed the work at the multipurpose plaza again, and I once again felt the deep sense of community and openness of the venue as a venue for performing works. The flat space allows for a high degree of freedom in how the stage and audience seats are arranged, and I think it's particularly attractive that there are so many options for how to use the space. With the new opening as Studio HIKARI, which will be easier to use as a small theater, I have high hopes that not only myself but a variety of performers and creators will be able to challenge themselves in various ways of showing and creating. .

waqu:iraz, which I organize, is also planning to perform the work this summer. Using Oscar Wilde's play ``Salome'' as a motif, the all-female cast will once again create a work through divising (collective creation by the cast, direction, and choreography). Planning is still in progress, but I would like to try new creations with the attractive cast and staff.

We are delighted that the multipurpose plaza will be reborn as a theater in both name and reality. The renovation, which will be carried out in stages, will begin by painting the floors and walls black, allowing nailing into the floors, and installing a new private entrance and foyer. I imagine that just by doing this, the usability will change considerably, and the impression of the space will change fundamentally (when we performed Hamlet in this place, we wanted everything to be all black, so we put up blackout curtains). It took a lot of effort to wrap it around and lay lino.)

If the functionality is easy to use and it shows its posture as a theater, then at the same time it should be called the ``spirit of the theater'', or ``the soul of the theater'', ``what dwells in the theater'', and ``what makes the theater a theater.'' '', but in any case, I hope that aspects related to the appearance of theaters will also change.

For a long time, plays and dance performances have been performed in the multipurpose plaza, attracting a variety of theater artists and dancers from young people to veterans, and the feeling that it is a ``theatre'' has been accumulated by those who have set foot there. This led to the government's movement and its rebirth into a ``theatre'' in both name and reality. Aside from issues with design and materials, my opinion is that when a theater space is soaked with the blood, sweat, and tears of those who have stepped foot in it, and is home to the buzz of countless ghosts, becomes imbued with a certain special power.

Ghosts are the echoes of the countless lines whispered (or shouted) in a place, the breath of the audience each night, and the people's expectations, hopes, longings, rumors, dreams, and memories of that place. It means.

“There is a small theater like this in Kanagawa Prefecture.”
``The play I saw there was interesting.''
"My senior will be appearing in that theater next time."
"How should I use that pillar?"
“I want to perform in that theater someday.”

I hope that the theater will be a place where more ghosts can be legitimately brought in. I heard that the number of performances held each year will increase as the theater becomes more popular than ever. In addition to performances, a variety of workshops (for example, year-round theater workshops for junior high and high school students) and lectures are held, creating a place for continuous exchange, and making this theater a great place for theater artists and dancers in Kanagawa. I hope that it will come to occupy a certain position.

In order to give the theater on the hill in Sakuragicho an attractive appearance that can only be found here, we, the creators, will boldly create good plays/dance and stages that will vividly transform the way we see the world. , I would like to strive to create, sometimes with abandon.
