Hiratsuka City Art Museum

Hiratsuka is located in the center of the coast of Sagami Bay facing the Pacific Ocean, 50 km southwest of the capital Tokyo, and in the Edo period was replaced as one of the tokyo stations in Tokaido. Today, the total area of the city is 67.88 square kilometers, the current population is about 260 000, blessed with a temperate climate and rich nature, it is popular as a core city with balanced industries and also as a resort.

In the area called "Shonan" including Hiratsuka, many artists have lived since the Meiji era (the end of the 19th century) and developed art movement. For example, activities were developed in Kamakura, a magazine that greatly influenced Japanese modern art and literature, in Kamakura, and in Kageuma, Kusadaya of Kishida Ryoji who pursued a new style of oil painting. Many writers have been active since then.

The construction of the museum in Hiratsuka City was soon after the war. In the reconstruction from the air raid, what became the center was the local writers who voluntarily opened the exhibition. In the early 1960s, a donation movement for one artist to the city began, and following the construction of schools, community centers and libraries, the Hiratsuka City Museum opened in 1976, where the art department was established . After that, like the nationwide movement of lifelong learning and museum construction, in 1984 the museum construction research committee was launched, concrete movements towards the opening began, and in 1986 Hiratsuka City Museum of Art Basic Conception In 1986, he established the basic plan for construction of the Hiratsuka City Art Museum, then started construction work and business preparation, and opened in March 1991.

Since the opening, since the main theme is "Shonan art / light" as the museum located in the center of the Shonan area, we will deepen our understanding of the culture by offering excellent artworks at home and abroad for people's viewing in good environment, We have been carrying out various projects as a major purpose to stimulate the motivation of creation and learning.

We will continue to play a part in the cultural maturity of the Shonan area and strive to enhance museum activities so that many people will be familiar.
