The first shrine visit of the new year is an important moment. This is an opportunity to pray for peace throughout the year and make wishes for other aspirations. Kawasaki Daishi is a temple at which the chief abbot begins a ceremony at midnight on January 1 to light votive sticks in front of the principal object of worship in the hall. This rite is designed as a prayer for the safety and tranquility of the nation and emperor, and that the prayers and aspirations of worshipers everywhere may be realized.
From January 1-31, many make a pilgrimage to pay their New Year’s respects in the first visit of the New Year. During the first three days of 2018, 3.09M visitors came to the temple.
