English-Language Zazen Retreats<Kencho-ji>

Kencho-ji is the top-ranked of the five most important temples in Kamakura and the head temple of the Kencho-ji sect of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. It was first constructed in the year 1253.
Zazen retreats are held here each Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. A lecture is given before starting, so those who have never participated before won’t have to worry about what they need to do.
There is no charge to participate; however, there is a separate fee to enter the temple grounds (¥500 for ages 15+, ¥200 for children aged 6-14).
English-language zazen retreats are also held here. You can fully experience the world of zazen with a session that lasts for approximately two hours. Following an explanation in English, participants undertake three rounds of seated meditation for 15-20 minutes each with intervals of walking meditation, followed by a tea ritual and question-and-answer session. Please inquire directly with the temple for information about scheduling.
* Reservations required.
Participation Fee: ¥1,000
