"Violin" The greatest force in the orchestra

What kind of instrument is a violin?
We asked Nao Komiya, the second violinist.

The violin is said to be the most expensive musical instrument. High-priced items cost hundreds of millions of yen. However, it weighs about 500g. How much will it cost ...

Pine is used for the front plate, and maple is used for the side and back plates. Each is glued together and the surface is varnished. The violin has four strings and makes a sound by rubbing it with a bow or flicking it with a finger. A hard and strong tree called Fernandbuco is used for the bow, and the tail hair of the horse is stretched and pine oil is applied to play. There is no sound unless you apply pine oil!
Musical instruments that rub strings with a bow, such as the violin, have a long history, and have been found not only in Europe but also in Asia and Africa.
It is said that the current shape of the violin was invented in northern Italy around the middle of the 16th century. From the 17th to the 18th centuries, many masters appeared, especially in Italy (Stradivari was one of them), and many of the violins they made are still in use today. Improvements have been made such as lengthening the fingerboard to widen the range and raising the piece to increase the volume, but it is still possible to play the same instrument used in the Bach era. Feels romance.

Many composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky have left their songs. Just as Sarasate, who was also a famous violinist, composed "Zigeunerweisen", there are many famous songs by people who know the charm of musical instruments.

A glimpse of Nao Komiya's performance!

A stringed instrument consisting of five groups. What is each role?

The stringed instruments, which make up more than half of the members of the orchestra, consist of five groups: the first violin, the second violin, the viola, the cello and the contrabass.

The first violin is in charge of the highest range. Lead vocals in a band! Everyone longs to see the beautiful tunes played enchantingly !!

So what does the second violin do with the same instrument?
Occasionally, he takes charge of the melody together with the first violin, reinforces the melody and harmony with counter-melody, and also plays the role of steering the entire orchestra by carving the rhythm. It is a group of craftsmen who pay attention to everywhere.

The viola often plays a role with the second violin, but the sweet and soft tone in the midrange shows a unique charm even when playing the melody.

And the cello and contrabass with the charm of bass. If music is likened to a building, it will be the foundation and pillars. If this area sways, the entire building will collapse.

These five parts work together to form the skeleton of the orchestra.
