Hiratsuka Museum of Art![]() Hiratsuka is located in the center of the coast of Sagami Bay facing the Pacific Ocean, 50km southwest of the capital city of Tokyo. With a total area of 67.88 square kilometers and a current population of approximately 260,000, the city is blessed with a mild climate and abundant nature. The area called "Shonan", which includes Hiratsuka, has been home to many artists since the Meiji period (end of the 19th century) and has developed art movements. For example, Shirakaba, a magazine that had a great influence on modern Japanese art and literature, was published in Kamakura, and Ryusei Kishida's Sodosha, which pursued a new style of oil painting, developed its activities in Kugenuma. Since then, many artists have been active up to the present day. It was shortly after the war that the construction of an art museum was proposed in Hiratsuka City. The focus was on local artists who had voluntarily held exhibitions in the midst of the recovery from the air raids. In the early 1960s, they began to donate one artist, one work to the city, building schools, public halls, and libraries, and in 1976, when the Hiratsuka City Museum opened, an art department was established there. . After that, in 1984, in Hiratsuka, as with the nationwide movement for lifelong learning and museum construction, a museum construction research committee was established, and concrete movements toward the opening of the museum began. In 1986, the basic construction plan for the Hiratsuka Art Museum was formulated, after which construction work and business preparations began, and the museum opened in March 1991. Since its opening, as an art museum located in the center of the Shonan area, the main theme has been <Shonan art and light>. Various projects have been carried out with the major purpose of stimulating the desire to create and learn. We will continue to play a role in the maturation of the culture of the Shonan region and strive to enhance our museum activities so that many people can become familiar with it.
