A quiet and comfortable space where you'll want to stop by on the way up a slope.
Art Gallery Yamate

Yatozaka slope, which leads to Yamate Hill in Yokohama, is lined with Port View Hill Park and exotic Western-style buildings. A little away from the hustle and bustle of the city filled with tourists, there is Art Gallery Yamate, a gallery with windows overlooking the slope, in a quiet and relaxing place. They are occupying a renovated room in a building that was once a weekly apartment for foreigners.

On the day of the interview, the ``Metalwork and Woodwork Two-person Exhibition'' was being held.

On the stairs leading to the gallery entrance, I was greeted by a cute Nora-chan (commonly known as Suzuki-san) who lives in the area. (I ran away right away, but it was good timing!)

As soon as you step into the gallery, you are greeted by a cozy, white space that is not too large and gives visitors a sense of relief.

Soft natural light streams in from the large windows facing the slope, breathing life into each work displayed there. It's like being invited into a writer's room.

You can see greenery outside the window, so it feels especially nice on sunny days!

Now, we asked the two artists who were involved in the "Metalwork and Woodwork Two-person Exhibition" that was being held at the time of our interview about the appeal of this gallery! They are both current graduate students working on metalwork and woodwork, respectively. They have been saying for some time that they would like to have an opportunity to exhibit their works together in the Kanto region someday, and the two-person exhibition was finally made possible during summer vacation. congratulations!!

``This is my first time using Art Gallery Yamate, and it's a really nice location. It's a space where three-dimensional objects stand out, so I'm very happy that it's easy to display my works.'' Mr. Atsushi Tajima (photo right) is a metalworker. In addition, woodworker Souma Todoroki said, ``The things we both make are completely different.Even though they are different in terms of materials, I think we were able to bring them together so well because of this white-based space.'' ” he said with satisfaction.

This gallery displays a variety of works, regardless of category, such as sculptures, paintings, photographs, vessels, textiles, etc. The artists used range in age from people over 80 to university students, regardless of age or gender. We spoke to the owner and gallerist, Kayoko Furuichi.

“If you go up this Yato slope, you will find many cultural facilities such as the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Literature, as well as tourist spots such as the Foreign Cemetery and the Yamate Western Museum. We have placed gallery DMs in various places. There are many people who stop by and say, ``Oh, there's a gallery here too'' after enjoying each of them. Our gallery has a wide range of ages among the artists who use it. It's a large venue, but like this one, we strive to foster young artists, and we hope to be able to help in any way we can.We hope that everyone will come and visit us."

If you look downhill from the gallery window, you can also see Yokohama Marine Tower. "Art Gallery Yamate" is surrounded by the wonderful scenery of Yokohama. When walking around Yokohama Yamate, a place that everyone admires, be sure to stop by this small gallery located halfway up the hill.
