"Hakone Museum of Art" is the oldest museum in Hakone. The founder, Mokichi Okada, believes that "art works should never be monopolized, and that showing and entertaining as many people as possible and improving human character greatly contributes to the development of culture." Under these circumstances, the Hakone Museum of Art was opened in Gora, Hakone-machi in June 1952, and the "Tomei Art Preservation Society (currently: Mokichi Okada Art and Culture Foundation)" was established in September.
In 1982, the MOA Museum of Art, a sister building, was opened in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Is mainly exhibited.
In 1944, Mokichi Okada acquired and redeveloped the Japanese-style garden part of Raita Fujiyama's other villas and Gora Park, named it "Shinsenkyo", and built an art museum in it. .. "Shinsenkyo" was registered as a national registered monument on August 1, 2013, as it has a high value as a historical cultural heritage.
On the premises, there are "moss garden" colored with about 130 kinds of moss and 200 maples, "Hagi no Michi" which is in full bloom in September, and "bamboo garden" where you can feel the Chinese style garden. You can enjoy the scenery of each season. Especially in November, the maples in the garden are colored all at once, and it is also famous as a famous spot for autumn leaves.
On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays and in November, in addition to the normally open garden, the backyard "Ishirakuen" centered on the stonework of the giant rock will also be open to the public. At the tea room "Mawatei" facing the moss lawn, you can enjoy matcha cultivated without pesticides and seasonal Japanese sweets while gazing at the scenery of each season.
