Who is Toshi?
Who is Kei Ichiyanagi?

Kei Ichiyanagi ©︎Koh Okabe

He is an avant-garde composer who has always been on the cutting edge, a pianist who spans everything from classical to contemporary music, an introducer of John Cage in Japan, and an organizer who handles various projects. or···.

In 2020, he celebrated his 20th anniversary as the artistic director of the Kanagawa Arts Foundation. However, on the other hand, this year is also an unforgettable year in that humanity was enveloped by the coronavirus pandemic. Bad luck? No, the fact that these two overlap seems symbolic in a sense. For Ichiyanagi, who has continued to consider the relationship between music and nature, composing is also an act of searching for knowledge that can help human society overcome its own fragility. Therefore, the two concerts held under the name of the Toshi legend are sure to create a space that is more than just a pretty thing and illuminates the situation of the coronavirus pandemic through music.

On March 20th (Saturday/Holiday), a marathon concert entitled "Extreme LOVE" will be held at the Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall. In the first part, various elements that formed Kei Ichiyanagi's existence are laid out, including ``Kreutzer Sonata'' for which he played the piano and Toru Takemitsu's ``Blue Aurora for Kei Ichiyanagi.'' The second part features shamisen player Hidejiro Honjo and other young hopefuls in the Japanese music world. It will become clear that the world of Japanese musical instruments is actually Ichiyanagi's hidden core. In the third part, Takuji Kawai audiovises the monumental series "Piano Music 1-7." There are also signs that something unexpected will happen...

Furthermore, there is an intermission where you can enjoy sound installations and talks in the foyer, which takes advantage of the modernist architecture designed by Kunio Maekawa. In addition, it will be a day of new sensations and art that can be enjoyed at the Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall. Each concert lasts approximately 1 hour with no intermission, has a rotating system, and all seats are free. The details are as follows.
