Yokohama Okurayama Memorial Hall

The Okurayama Memorial Hall was originally built in 1932 by Kunihiko Okura (1882-1971), a businessman and future president of Toyo University, as the main building of the Okura Institute of Spiritual Culture. Donated to the City of Yokohama in 1981, the building underwent extensive renovations and conservation efforts. It was reborn as the Yokohama Okurayama Memorial Hall in 1984 and designated a Yokohama City Tangible Cultural Property in 1991. Since its opening, the building has become a beloved cultural facility for local residents, hosting numerous community-based events, including the Okurayama Autumn Arts Festival, which attracts over 10,000 visitors, the Children's Day Children's Festival, and the December "Merry Christmas on a Little Hill" festival. The building's Greek temple-style pilotis, the No. 5 Assembly Room, which retains the atmosphere of the early Showa period, the hall incorporating the timber framework of shrine architecture, and the entrance hall have all been used as filming locations for numerous movies and television programs.
