Yokohama City Okurayama Memorial Hall
Founded in 1932 by businessman Kunihiko Okura (1882-1971), who later served as president of Toyo University, as the main building of the "Okura Institute for Spiritual and Cultural Studies," the building was donated to Yokohama City in 1981. After extensive renovations and preservation efforts, it was reborn as the Yokohama City Okurayama Memorial Hall in 1984 and designated as a Yokohama City Designated Tangible Cultural Property in 1991. Since its opening, it has become a beloved cultural facility for citizens, hosting numerous community-oriented events such as the "Okurayama Autumn Arts Festival," which attracts over 10,000 visitors, the "Children's Festival" held on Children's Day, and "Merry Christmas on the Little Hill" in December. Furthermore, its Greek temple-style pilotis, the fifth meeting room which retains the atmosphere of the early Showa period, the hall incorporating the wooden framework of Shinto shrine architecture, and the entrance have all been used as filming locations for movies and television shows. |
