Pola Museum of Art

Pola Museum of Art

The Pola Museum of Art opened in 2002 in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, based on the concept of "coexistence of Hakone's nature and art." The Pola Museum of Art's collection was amassed over 40 years by Tsuneji Suzuki, the second generation of the Pola founding family, and comprises a total of 10,000 items, including Western paintings, Japanese Western-style paintings, Japanese paintings, prints, Oriental ceramics, glass art, and cosmetic tools from all over the world and throughout history. Designed with consideration for Hakone's nature and landscape, the building is kept to a height of 8 meters above ground level, with much of the building located underground, creating a form that blends into the forest. Furthermore, to allow visitors to enjoy the rich natural environment within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park even more, a walking trail was grand opened in July 2013. Visitors can enjoy nature walks in a forest where beech and Japanese stewartia trees grow in clusters, in addition to viewing the artworks.

Our collection of Western paintings, primarily Impressionist works by artists such as Monet and Renoir, is one of the largest in Japan. Located in the popular tourist area of Hakone, we offer a tranquil setting for appreciating authentic works of art. As one of our special features, the lighting in the exhibition rooms is set to resemble "a July evening in Paris" to beautifully showcase Impressionist paintings. In addition, we refresh our original goods and restaurant course menus to match the theme of each special exhibition, ensuring that you can enjoy your visit without getting bored, whether it's for a different exhibition or a different season. Spend some time immersed in our rich collection and works by leading contemporary artists in a light-filled architectural space.
