Kougetsu Theatre Company performance "Ogri - Oguri Uenosuke -"
The time was the end of the Edo period, in the midst of the Boshin War.
Taking advantage of the weakened shogunate, mobs were rampant, attacking wealthy homes while shouting about "reforming society," and their reach was threatening Kamakura.
The village officials gathered at Kakuenji Temple decided to defend themselves and, by chance, began plotting to invite Oguri Tadamasa, who had been relieved of his important position in the shogunate and was living in seclusion in Takasaki, Joshu, to be their instructor.
Meanwhile, Oguri had also become a target of the "social reform" movement due to rumors that he had absconded with the shogunate's military funds.
The distance between Kamakura in Sagami Province and Takasaki in Joshu Province is approximately 200 km (50 ri).
Crossing the 50-mile road that has become a lawless zone, an unprecedented operation to set the world right and repel the invaders begins...
Set against the backdrop of Kakuenji Temple, a renowned temple in Kamakura, "Ogri," which was highly acclaimed at the Nakanojo Biennale 2023 international art festival, will see a new development in its Kamakura version.
This is a Bakumatsu-era blues drama by Kogetsu, centering on the tragic genius Oguri Tadamasa and depicting ordinary people bravely facing the changing times.
