Concert commemorating the 157th anniversary of the birth of Japanese wind band music
In 1869 (Meiji 2), at Myokoji Temple in Honmoku-san, Naka Ward, Yokohama City, more than 30 samurai from the Satsuma Domain received instruction in musical instruments from J.W. Fenton, the bandmaster of the British Army, marking the beginning of wind band music in Japan.
In September 1989 (Heisei 1), the Japan Band Directors Association took the lead in collecting donations from the band community to erect the "Monument Commemorating the Birthplace of Japanese Band Music" on the grounds of Myokoji Temple. Concerts have been held to commemorate this monument, and since 2008, the commemorative concert has been held on "Sports Day" in October, coinciding with Myokoji Temple's "Oeshiki" festival. This year, we are pleased to announce that the Yokohama City Fire Department Band will be performing.
