Yokosuka Arts Theatre

The Yokosuka Arts Theatre opened in February 1994 on the site of the EM Club (US Navy Service Club), the birthplace of post-war Japanese jazz, as a place that connects people and culture to enrich the lives of the citizens of Yokosuka. The EM Club was the birthplace of post-war Japanese jazz, and from immediately after the end of the war, world-renowned entertainers such as Louis Armstrong frequently came to perform there. In later years, leading Japanese musicians such as George Kawaguchi and Nobuo Hara gave passionate performances there, spreading the authentic flavor of American music throughout the country.

Comprising two distinct theaters—the large theater (Yokosuka Arts Theatre) and the small theater (Yokosuka Bayside Pocket)—the Yokosuka Arts Theatre has hosted numerous performances of leading domestic and international operas, ballets, and classical music since its opening, becoming a vibrant symbol of Yokosuka and a hub for arts, culture, and excitement.
