Learn by walking! The Hakone Ekiden course - Part 1: Kawasaki to Yokohama
—From a post town to the Namamugi Incident and the stage for the opening of Yokohama Port—
The Hakone Ekiden, a New Year's tradition, is a familiar sight on television, but its course actually holds a rich history and culture. A current guide will explain the remnants of the Edo-period post town and its culture, the setting of the Namamugi Incident, and the drama of Yokohama's opening to the world, along with the city's transformations that you won't find in textbooks!
At the Tokaido Kawasaki-juku Exchange Hall, you can try on Edo-period travel costumes, and there are also plans to introduce the Tsurumi Shrine's "Ta Matsuri" (rice field festival) and Eisa dance, an explanation of the traditional performing art "Hebi mo Ka mo" (snakes and mosquitoes) from Namamugi, and information about Kanagawa Kagura and Tokaido Kanagawa-juku Yose (traditional storytelling performances) that remain in Kanagawa-juku!
Walking with friends or a guide makes 13km fly by. The sense of accomplishment after completing the walk is exceptional!
