Emile Galle - collection of nature

At the Pola Museum of Art, we will hold an exhibition of Emile Galle in about 10 years. Galle, known as the artist of the Art Nouveau in the field of glass craft, has diversified interests such as literature, philosophy, rhetoric, music, botany, mineralogy, and biology, And demonstrated that knowledge to the design. Among other things, two fountains of nature, "Forest" and "Sea", fascinated the gallelettes.
Charles Darwin's book "Origin of Species" was published in 1859. Galle, who continued his research on plants under the strong influence of Darwin's theory of evolution, thought that "forest" which is the residence of insects and plants is a symbol of life. As represented by the epidemic of Jules Verne 's "Underwater Underwater" published in 1870, the second half of the nineteenth century was also an era when interest in oceanography and marine organisms increased. "The brave oceanographers who dive in the deep ocean bring us the mysteries of the ocean … [… …] The researcher photographs and publishes the form of an unusual object which can be said to be the sea crown scroll, and is offered to the artist "It is Galle's saying," Ocean "is also a source of nature that is indispensable for artists as well as" Forest ".
Nature has become popular as a design of the Art Nouveau period, but there is no other artist who produced the work making full use of the knowledge about nature as much as Galle. The acts of artists who incorporate various forms and designs of nature into their own work can be compared to those of collectors collecting nature. In this exhibition, we will examine the gathering of nature by Galle through the two keywords "forest" and "sea" while tracing the galle's art from the beginning to the end of the year.
