Okada Museum of Art

Okada Museum of Art

Located in Kowakidani, Hakone, this museum opened in 2013 and houses a large collection of Japanese and East Asian paintings, ceramics, and other works. The vast five-story building displays works from a wide range of periods and fields, including early modern and modern Japanese paintings, East Asian (China, Korea, and Japan) ceramics, archaeological artifacts such as Jomon pottery and Haniwa, Buddhist art from ancient and medieval times such as Buddhist statues and paintings, calligraphy, lacquerware, jade objects, and glassware. At the front of the museum, visitors are greeted by a large mural, "Wind and Time," measuring 12m high and 30m wide, painted by contemporary Japanese painter Kotaro Fukui based on Tawaraya Sotatsu's national treasure "Wind God and Thunder God Folding Screen." The museum also boasts excellent facilities, including a footbath cafe with 100% natural hot spring water overlooking the mural, and "Kaika-tei," where visitors can enjoy meals and tea while admiring the garden that changes its appearance with the seasons.
