Kamakura City Kawakita Film Memorial Museum

Kamakura City Kawakita Film Memorial Museum

The Kamakura Kawakita Film Memorial Museum opened in April 2010 on the former site of the residence of Nagamasa and Kashiko Kawakita, a couple who made significant contributions to the development of Japanese cinema. The museum aims to promote the development of film culture in Kamakura. At the museum, visitors can view film materials, watch films, and access film-related materials and conduct web searches. Lectures, seminars, and workshops are also held throughout the year.

The building is a single-story, traditional Japanese structure that embodies the image of a sukiya-zukuri (tea ceremony house) and harmonizes with its surroundings. The wooden fence has also been restored to its original appearance, and the bright, wide openings in the exhibition room offer views of the lush garden, creating a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of the ancient city of Kamakura.

Located close to the bustling Komachi Street, yet situated in a surprisingly tranquil setting just one street away, this venue offers a relaxed atmosphere befitting the ancient city of Kamakura. Although movie theaters have now disappeared from Kamakura, this theater, equipped with a film projector, regularly screens classic films from around the world, allowing you to enjoy movies on a large screen.
