The Kamakura Annex, which opened in 1984, is located about 350 meters on foot from the former Kamakura Museum (closed in March 2016) towards Kita-Kamakura. The architect was Masato Otaka (1923-2010). The design was carefully crafted to blend into the residential area nestled between the mountains. After more than 30 years of operation, and after a two-year closure for facility renovations and improvements to user services, it reopened on October 12, 2019. The walls of the exhibition rooms were completely redesigned, and a cafe space and other amenities were added to the terrace facing the sculpture garden, improving accessibility.
