Opened in 1976, the museum's activities are centered around the theme of "Nature and Culture of the Sagami River Basin." It is not limited to the administrative boundaries of Hiratsuka City, but takes a broader view of the region, including the surrounding areas, to meet a wide range of educational needs. It is a comprehensive regional museum with exhibits covering history, folklore, archaeology, astronomy, biology, geology, and art.
Based on the principle of citizen collaboration, various working groups have been formed and independent learning activities are being carried out.
