Established in 1976, the museum focuses on the theme of "Nature and Culture of the Sagami River Basin." It takes a broad perspective on the region, encompassing not only the administrative boundaries of Hiratsuka City but also surrounding areas, and caters to a wide range of learning needs. It is a comprehensive regional museum covering the fields of history, folklore, archaeology, astronomy, biology, geology, and art.
Based on the principle of citizen collaboration, various working groups have been formed, and proactive learning activities are also being carried out.
