Miura City designated important intangible folk cultural property (designated June 12, 2017)
The annual Kainan Shrine Summer Festival is a festival that has been held since the Edo period. In the mid-Meiji period, it was changed from a sea procession to a land procession, but even from the land procession onwards, it has a history of about 130 years.
The three main features of the Kainan Shrine Summer Festival that have been handed down are, first, the lion procession, which was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Miura City in 1992, and second, the festival rotation system (commonly known as the "Nenban") that is unique to Miura and Misaki, the portable shrine procession accompanied by lumberjack songs, the lion procession, and the float parade.
The portable shrine procession that takes place in the Misaki Shitamachi area on the two days before Marine Memorial Day in July is a brave and elegant affair that continues the traditions of the Edo period, befitting a port town. It features a lot to see, including the portable shrine followed by the lion dance, floats, woodcutter's music and traditional music.
