A museum in a department store with a quiet and spacious space
Infiltrate an artistic space!
YOKOHAMA ART SPOT FILE
Between shopping, you may encounter art that moves your heart!
Did you know that there is a quiet and calm museum on the 6th floor of the Sogo Yokohama store at the east exit of Yokohama station? The Sogo Museum of Art opened in September 1985 as a full-scale museum of unprecedented scale with the opening of a department store, aiming to become a cultural facility that serves as a base for transmitting life, culture and information. It is also known for the collection of about 160 oil paintings and watercolors by Shintaro Suzuki, a painter who was active in the Western painting era in the Showa era. In addition to exhibitions of Western paintings, Japanese paintings, sculptures, prints, etc., a wide variety of exhibitions are held, including unique project exhibitions with the theme of science fiction movies and girl manga. It is also attractive that you can feel free to experience the world of art by stopping by while you are shopping.
A ticket office located beside the entrance to the museum. Admission fees vary depending on the exhibition. The opening hours are basically the same as the business hours of the Sogo Yokohama store, from 10:00 to 20:00 (entry is closed until 30 minutes).
*The closing time may be earlier than the last day of the exhibition.

After purchasing the ticket, first check your luggage, coat, etc. in this locker. Since it is a coin-return type locker (100 yen) that is unique to museums, if you take out your luggage after viewing, 100 yen will be returned. Of course there is also an umbrella stand opposite.
I showed this ticket and found this before I entered the hall.
If you want to take a note of what you feel or learn while watching art, please use it. It is a free rental service of simple pencil pegsill. Usually, in museums and museums that handle important works of art, it is good practice to avoid using pencils, mechanical pencils, ballpoint pens that may scatter ink, fountain pens, etc., which may cause core breakage. Let's talk to the staff and borrow it.
When I visited the interview this time, "Japanese paintings and Western paintings from the Showa era, "Painting trend exhibition"" (Saturday, March 4, 2017-Sunday, April 9, 2017) was being held. I took a special picture of the inside of the building. When you take a step back, you will find a quiet space in a different world from the busy streets of the department stores.

Depending on the exhibition, there is also a video corner where you can sit and watch.
By the way, after seeing a lot of wonderful art, go to the museum shop attached to the museum. In addition to original goods with the motif of the works of the exhibition being held, various art and design goods are available. You can also enjoy visiting the museum shops after viewing.
In one corner of the museum shop, there is also an original museum goods designed by Mr. Minako Fukuoka who has the motif of the work of Shintaro Suzuki, the painter mentioned above! There are lots of fashionable and cute designs that suit your mood.
Including popular masking tapes now, mugs, tote bags, pins, clear files, stickers, postcards, etc. Of course, you can purchase it even if you don't use the museum, so please come and visit.
