Founder Mokichi Okada acquired land in Gora, Hakone, including Fujiyama Raita's villa, from 1944 onwards, which he developed and named "Shinsenkyo." Finally, he built the museum, which opened in 1952. His aim was to plan the museum in a garden that would harmonize the beauty of natural landscapes with the beauty of artificial gardens. The museum is surrounded by scenery that changes with the seasons, including the "Moss Garden" decorated with moss and maple trees, the "Stone Garden" with its huge rock formations (partially closed to the public), and the "Hagi Road" (best viewed around September).
