There are many Noh plays known as "Shura Noh (second play)." While depicting battle scenes with warlords of the Genpei clan as the main characters, "Shura Noh" portrays human suffering and sorrow against a backdrop of Buddhist ideas such as the notion of impermanence. However, there are also many plays that show the elegant side of the warlords, and the tragic nature of the plays stands out even more in contrast.
This planned performance will be a six-part series of famous "Shura Noh" pieces that will give you a taste of the elegant side of the warlords. Each performance will feature a gagaku performance related to the respective piece, a waka poetry reading, and a memorial service for the Kannon Buddhist saint, allowing you to experience more deeply the elegance of the warlords of the time and the transience of the end of battle. In addition, a special lecture will be held in conjunction with the performance. Following the lecture, there will be a roundtable discussion from various perspectives, unraveling the thoughts, culture, and lifestyles of the Japanese people of the time, and delving into the world of "Shura Noh," so please enjoy it to the fullest.
The second Shura Noh and Kyogen performance, to be held on Sunday, October 7th, will focus on warlords depicted in Kyogen. The Kyogen "Satsuma no Kami" features an interesting verse that plays on the words "Nasu," "free ride" and "Satsuma no Kami loyalty" in the anecdote of Nasu no Yoichi shooting at a fan target during the Battle of Yashima, and "Tsuen," a Kyogen that imitates the words of the Battle of Uji Bridge from the Noh play "Yorimasa."
