Special exhibition "Rie Iwatake + Junya Kataoka x Collection: A Pictorial Book for Gravity and Materials"
Iwatake Rie + Kataoka Junya (both 1982-) have been presenting their work as a unit since 2013. By composing Iwatake's two-dimensional works, which contemplate the spatiality of paintings through image associations, and Kataoka's kinetic works, which are inspired by everyday and natural phenomena, into an installation, they have encouraged new visual experiences that evoke physicality and time. This exhibition is a project in which artists and curators have selected works, mainly Japanese art such as mandalas, Otsu-e, catfish paintings, and tea utensils, to shed new light on the museum's collection. Through playful and unique methods, the exhibition explores the formative characteristics and appeal of Japanese art, such as "mitate," which likens an object to something else to represent something that does not actually exist, and the "nesting" structure of paintings shown in ukiyo-e paintings.

Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura AnnexThe Kamakura Annex, which opened in 1984, is located about 350 meters on foot from the former Kamakura Hall (closed in March 2016) in the direction of Kita-Kamakura. It was designed by Masato Otaka (1923-2010). It was designed to blend in with the residential area between the mountains. After more than 30 years in business and a two-year closure for facility renovations and to improve user services, it reopened on October 12, 2019. The walls of the exhibition rooms have been renovated, and a café space has been added to the terrace facing the sculpture garden, improving accessibility. |
