Interview with Takayuki Fujimoto

藤本隆行インタビュー

We interviewed Takayuki Fujimoto, who will be exhibiting an installation work at Smart Illumination 2013.

Fujimoto will be exhibiting "Time Lapse Plant One Ring -Energy Rescue Ship Version-" at Zou-no-hana Park as Takayuki Fujimoto + Motoi Ishibashi + Daito Manabe .

Q1) About the work

- From the title, we can imagine that this work is a different version of "Time Lapse Plant" from the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions. What are the differences from the previous work and are there any episodes that are unique to this one?

This work is the "1 Ring" version of the work that was created and presented at BankART NYK from the end of 2009 to the beginning of 2010 during a residency and exhibited at the 2nd Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions as "Time Lapse Plant 4 Rings/Fake Accelerator Landscape Edition." This time, the One Ring installed at the tip of the Zo-no-hana embankment is powered by the ship's power generation equipment, which is expected to be a power source in the event of an emergency, and the illumination of the power ship itself is also done by electricity from the ship. In addition, a new module named OneDot installed on the red brick side of the embankment will light up in sync with the Ring. OneDot is an independent light that combines a solar panel, LED, and wireless function, and generates power during the day using its own functions and lights up via wireless control from the Ring.
The viewer's shadow is projected onto the floor beneath the Ring, but just like in the previous piece, these shadows dance a spinning dance regardless of the viewer's will, sometimes splitting into three colored shadows and moving at different speeds. You can't see your own shadow dancing unless you actually stand on the stage beneath the Ring. Please go to the tip of the Elephant's Trunk and take another look at your own shadow.

Q2) About "Hikari"

- What does "Hikari" mean to you, Mr. Fujimoto? Please feel free to answer freely.

Light is the only energy that comes to this planet from outside the Earth. Oil, coal, wind, and temperature all originate from the light that comes from the Sun.
Also, due to the limitations of the functions of each species, all living things can only see different wavelengths of light. For example, when red, green, and blue wavelengths are received by the human eye at the same time, we feel that we are seeing white light, but this is because the human eye only has sensors that can sense red, green, and blue wavelengths, in other words, we cannot sense any other wavelengths. And when the brain receives stimuli of these three wavelengths at the same time, we see white color. In other words, humans can only sense a very small part of the bundle of wavelengths called light, and the brain creates colors by receiving and analyzing the stimuli. This means that if the sensors in the body and the brain are different, we will see different light. In fact, species that can be said to be direct descendants of dinosaurs, such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds, have four color sensors (cones) in their eyes and see different scenes than humans. In other words, light has a much wider range than we can sense, and we can only know a small part of it.

Q3) For visitors

I think that people from all over the country will come to Smart Illumination to see the night view of Yokohama. There are also many locals who stop by on their way home from work. Please say a few words to the visitors on the day.

The tip of Elephant's Trunk can be seen from many places, but it is a little far to actually reach it. However, if you go there, you will be able to see an interesting sight, so I recommend you make the short journey.
