Noism 10th Anniversary Project Noism1 & Noism2 Joint Performance Dramatic Dance "Carmen"
~Theater report~
Noism 10th Anniversary Dramatic Dance "Carmen"
I attended the first day of the Kanagawa performance.
When you hear "Carmen," many people think of opera or ballet, but this time it's dance and theater. The world is spun from Noism's unique story by choreographer Jo Kanamori and original music that is a novel composition of the famous music by G. Bizet.
You will surely see a new story that you can experience with your body and mind, something that you cannot see in the opera or ballet "Carmen."
When I entered the theater 15 minutes before the start of the show, my eye was caught by a bearded scholar-like figure on the far right side of the stage.
It didn't move at all, so I wondered if it was a doll, but then it suddenly started to move, and I was surprised! It wrote something, stood up... the story had already begun, and I began to feel an indescribable emotion welling up inside me, wondering what would happen next.
I was intrigued by the small details of the set, such as the gramophone on stage, but when I looked around the venue, I saw that the seats were full despite it being the first day, and my expectations were only growing.
~Performance Ends~
The performance ended with a storm of applause from the audience!
There were about five curtain calls!
Perhaps attracted by the overwhelming strength of the performance, some people stood up and applauded.
My impression after watching it was that Sawako's performance as Carmen was incredibly powerful...!!

She is simply seductive, and I am overwhelmed by her body movements and facial expressions that constantly seduce men. I felt her strength and bravery as a woman.
And I was just amazed at the high level of physical ability of the actors and dancers! They entertained us with a variety of dances, from smooth movements to intense movements to relaxed movements. The choreography made the most of the body, and I was simply moved! I couldn't help but look at the rich expressions on their faces.
In this Noism production of Carmen, the only person who speaks is the scholar who has been onstage before the performance began; everything else is expressed through dance.
Perhaps that's why I felt that it was something different and could be enjoyed with a fresh feeling, rather than just "Carmen."
As for the story, it includes characters that are not openly featured in ballet or opera.
So, those who are familiar with the ballet or opera "Carmen" may feel a little strange at first, but it was so wonderful that it made them realize that this was the "Noism version of Carmen."
There are several scenes where a screen is used for the production, which is really interesting!
When the actors and dancers entered the screen from the side, their shadows started to move as if they had entered the screen, and for a moment I thought, "What?!" It was as if the actors and dancers had really turned into shadows, and it was very mysterious.
There were a lot of shocking scenes, like cows and yellow balls falling from above, and I thought it was a good way to get a nerve racking...lol
And the music was amazing, with well-known songs rearranged in such innovative ways that I wondered, "They used this here?"
The dancing and music were of course wonderful, but the stage design was also interesting!
In particular, the furniture had shapes that I had never seen before, some slender and undulating, others sharp, and I wanted to trace every single shape. I felt that the beauty of wood carving was expressed in the best possible way.
As I have said many times before, this is truly Noism's own version of "Carmen."
It's a performance that can be summed up in one word: it's fun, filled with surprises, discoveries, and admiration. I think even people who are not familiar with the original "Carmen" will be able to enjoy it fully, no, more than enough! (Actually, I don't know much about it either...lol)
I've written a lot about this, but the only way to truly experience the excitement and power of this performance is to watch it!
This is a performance that I would recommend to both those who are just getting to know "Carmen" and those who already know the story!
It's been a while since I last saw a stage performance, and the old blood is bubbling away...lol
