The Kanagawa Prefectural Art Exhibition was launched in 1965 with the aim of contributing to the improvement of prefectural culture and the development of artists. Since then, it has become the prefecture's leading public art exhibition and has served as a stepping stone for up-and-coming artists, sending many outstanding artists out into the world.
The 52nd exhibition in 2016 saw the launch of a nationwide call for entries, aiming to further invigorate this open call exhibition by crossing regional boundaries and encouraging mutual stimulation through artwork. The prize money of up to 2 million yen, one of the highest in the country, is also a major attraction. The exhibition is divided into four categories: two-dimensional works, crafts, calligraphy, and photography, allowing visitors to enjoy a wide variety of artworks all in one place. Another highlight is the display of large-scale works that make use of the spacious space of the Kanagawa Prefectural Hall Gallery.
This time, we spoke to the artists who won the Grand Prize in each category of the 55th exhibition about a wide range of topics, from their motivations for applying to their activities since winning the award.
*The 56th Kanagawa Prefectural Art Exhibition, which was scheduled to be held in 2020, has been canceled in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to those who had planned to exhibit and those who were looking forward to the event, and we ask for your understanding.
