A modern space with a Japanese feel everywhere. The music is pleasant to listen to, and the interior and surrounding area of the restaurant gives you a sense of calm, free from the hustle and bustle of the city, despite being located within six minutes from the station. The space, which has attracted architectural attention, including winning an award for excellence at the 52nd General Architecture Competition, has two spaces, the north room and the south room, and the atrium connecting them is designed to change its appearance with the seasons.

The breakfast we had this time was a morning porridge set that used plenty of yuba delivered from Senmaruya in Kyoto. This colorful set, created by head chef Katayama, includes duck loin, grilled fish and other staples, as well as a vegetable stew and dessert, all for 2,000 yen. The yuba porridge is topped with ankake sauce made from Shinso's original blend of dashi called "Yukihira," which has a rich and elegant flavor. You can enjoy a variety of dishes in small portions in a well-balanced way, and the deep flavor that is unique to a specialty store that uses dashi for everything is gentle on the tongue, stomach and heart, creating a luxurious breakfast filled with Japanese aesthetics. What's more, if you find something that catches your eye during the meal, you can buy it at the shop attached to the Kita-no-ma room. The Kamakura store is the only place where you can find products from both Shinso, which started out with kelp tsukudani in the Edo period, and Dashi Kobo Sotatsu, so it's definitely worth a visit for shopping.

The shop has a modern and stylish white exterior. All the walls facing the street have been removed, welcoming you with an open and refreshing atmosphere. The outdoor sunlight pours into the open terrace seats, which seem to frame the blue sky.

Salmon tartare with avocado and poached eggs, salad with six kinds of vegetables and spicy grilled chicken... From the many menus available, I chose the popular French toast and grilled Oyama chicken set, along with champagne. The French toast is made with brioche! It's marinated overnight, giving it a crispy, fragrant exterior and a rich, custard-like texture inside. Its moderate sweetness is a perfect match for the juicy, satisfying grilled chicken. Pairing it with champagne makes you feel like you're in a luxury mood.

As the name suggests, at BRUNCH KITCHEN, you can enjoy brunch from 9am until 5pm. So, if you wake up slowly, there's no need to rush. How nice it would be to wake up slowly, take the train at your leisure, walk around the city of Kamakura, and then have a leisurely brunch! Enjoy a day where you can enjoy brunch to your heart's content.

GARDEN HOUSE is located near the ward office. Passing through the entrance surrounded by plants, you will find a 50-year-old atelier and a lush garden terrace. We sit on the terrace and enjoy granola, coffee, and the smoothie of the day. The yogurt served with the shop's specialty granola is colorfully sprinkled with figs, oranges, blueberries, kiwis, and bananas, and is finished with a refreshing sweetness from the maple syrup on the side. The smoothie of the day is made from papaya, grapefruit, and apple. It is freshly made, so it has a gentle natural sweetness. As we gaze out at the garden and sip our coffee, our busy bodies begin to relax, along with a couple reading the newspaper and neighbors stopping by between walks with their dog (they even provide water for dogs!).

For breakfast, you can enjoy five kinds of pancakes, French toast, and freshly brewed craft beer. They also sell tableware, clothing, and other miscellaneous items, as well as gardening tools. True to their concept of LOCAL & CRAFT, the menu features dishes made with local ingredients, and the garden is visited by many people from the neighborhood. Why not try spending a relaxing morning at GARDEN HOUSE?

– Breakfast I had this time –

Granola bowl, fresh fruit, yogurt, maple syrup, drink included (coffee, organic tea, or orange juice) ¥750
For an additional 300 yen, you can change your drink to the smoothie of the day.

Mornings at Asakusa Shokudo, a long-established restaurant founded in 1924, begin at 6am in Kamakura. Inside the restaurant, sake is lined up alongside a collection of miniature sailing ships and classic cars. I wonder if I'll actually be able to eat breakfast...but before I know it, Fujiwara, the third-generation manager, cheerfully greets me from the counter at the back. So I immediately ordered Asakusa Shokudo's proud "old-fashioned ramen" and gyoza! Don't be surprised that I'm eating such a hearty meal in the morning! The ramen soup is based on pork, chicken, and dried sardines, and has a slightly sweet and gentle taste. It seeps into my body after I've just woken up, and the noodles go down smoothly. The gyoza is very juicy, stuffed with green onions, chives, cabbage, garlic, and other vegetables. With each bite, my sleeping body wakes up and I feel a surge of energy. In addition to this, there is also a breakfast set that includes rice cooked in a hagama pot, miso soup with plenty of Kamakura vegetables, and onsen eggs and ham and eggs. It's getting colder and colder these days as we approach winter. Let's warm up our bodies and minds at Asakusa Shokudo before heading out into the city of Kamakura!

Breakfast near the market!
Old and new standards born from the value of cherishing everyday life

COBAKABA
1-13-15 Komachi, Kamakura City

Closed: Wednesdays
Morning hours: 8:00-10:00
Access: 3 minutes walk from the East exit of JR Kamakura Station

The wooden exterior is familiar, and the kitchen immediately catches your eye as you enter. The young female staff in slings and aprons cooking leaves a good impression. The space has a lively atmosphere befitting a store near a market, but at the same time, it is somehow calming and has an exquisite balance. The monthly changing exhibits may also play a part in this. When we visited in October, works by seto, a design label known for its animal-shaped products, were on display. On some days, they also hold events such as rakugo and live music. The owner, Uchibori, says that he aims to create a place that is "like a crossroads where people gather." Kamakura is a tourist destination that attracts many visitors from outside, but the market, the sea, and the mountains are a part of everyday life for the locals. COBACABA wants to cherish this everyday life, so their breakfast ideas are simple and standard, and therefore a safe and comfortable everyday taste.

This time I had the fried egg set meal. The fried egg, served with homemade additive-free dashi broth, is exceptional, and it's also delicious when mixed with the melting yolk and five-grain rice cooked to the perfect firmness. You can also add natto, a small side dish of the day, or dessert as options. Also, the "Betsubara Donuts" sold near the entrance are a recommended takeout menu item that may sell out quickly. You can buy them without going inside the store, so shopping at the market with a donut and a drink in hand might be a typical Kamakura way to spend the morning.

Bonus: Kamakura's market is bustling with people from early in the morning

Finally, as an extra feature, we would like to introduce the Kamakura City Agricultural Cooperative Association Market, located next to COBAKABA.
In addition to being able to get fresh Kamakura vegetables every morning, you can also buy bread from the popular bakery "Paradise Alley" located inside the market, so it's a place you'll want to stop by whenever you go to Kamakura. It's also recommended to go here early in the morning.
